Knuckles in Sonic 2 (Sonic & Knuckles Cartridge)
The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge (1994) includes a Lock-On technology that allows any Sonic 1, 2, or 3 cartridge to be connected, swapping the playable character to Knuckles. With Knuckles in Sonic 2, players experience the game with Knuckles’s gliding and wall-climbing abilities. This was Sega’s official solution to character swapping before rom-based implementations.
Special Stage Access
Sonic 2’s Special Stages (half-pipe runs) are accessed through checkpoint posts. To enter:
- Pass a Star Post checkpoint
- Jump and hold jump near the post while having 50 or more rings
- A ring portal appears at the top of the jump
Special Stages must be completed in sequence — there are no shortcuts to access specific emerald stages without completing prior ones.
Two-Player Mode Characters
In two-player split-screen, Player 1 controls Sonic and Player 2 controls Tails. The game tracks both players independently in split-screen races through selected stages. In the split-screen mode, Tails can fly (his two-tails spin is his flight mechanic) — this is only accessible in the two-player mode, not single-player.
Spin Dash Technique Guide
The Spin Dash (Down + Jump button held to rev, release to launch) is most effective:
- At the base of inclines where speed needs to be built quickly
- In enclosed spaces where a running start is impossible
- At the start of stages to immediately reach high speed
Rev the Spin Dash multiple times for maximum speed before releasing. The rev count determines the launch velocity.
Chemical Plant Zone Skip
In Chemical Plant Zone Act 2, there is a glitch where Sonic can clip into a wall in the water section using very specific positioning during the rising chemical liquid sequence. This is used in speedruns but is not reproducible without precise execution.
Hidden Palace Zone (Cut Level)
Hidden Palace Zone was programmed but cut from Sonic 2 before release. Using the Level Select (code above), select Hidden Palace from the level list to access this incomplete stage. It is visually complete but lacks proper gameplay — it was intended as an earlier stage before the final design was reconfigured. This is one of gaming’s most famous cut levels, recovered by fans.
Death Egg Boss Strategy (Final Boss Without Rings)
The Death Egg Zone’s two final bosses are fought with no rings — Sonic cannot collect rings or refill health. Tips:
- Mecha Sonic: Hit 8 times. He attacks in a set pattern — memorize it and wait for safe counterattack windows
- Giant Mech Eggman: Hit 12 times when his chest panel opens. Never jump toward him when he’s active — wait for the stationary window
Both bosses require patience and hitbox knowledge more than speed.
