Breath of Fire Cheat Codes & Secrets
Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Breath of Fire (1993).
Game Enhancement Device Codes
Breath of Fire has no built-in cheat code menu — it is a linear RPG with battery-backed SRAM saves and no password system. Cheat codes require an external device such as a Game Genie (cartridge pass-through for SNES hardware) or Pro Action Replay (PAR). The same raw addresses work in emulators like SNES9x and RetroArch via the cheat entry interface.
Game Genie Codes (SNES)
| Code | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
D0A4-DDA7 | Walk through most obstacles | Useful for sequence-breaking; some areas still block |
C2C1-04D4 | Start with maximum Zenny (gold) | Applied at new game start |
6D6B-0FAD | All items purchased cost 0 Zenny | Works at all shops |
CBCA-DFD7 | Ryu never runs out of AP | Infinite magic for Ryu |
CBE6-04A7 | Nina never runs out of AP | Infinite magic for Nina |
DDB4-DDA7 | Enemy encounter rate near zero | Great for traversal grinding avoidance |
CB84-5FD7 | Experience multiplied after battles | Levels up extremely fast |

Hidden and Easily Missed Party Members
Bleu (Deis) — The Optional Sorceress
Bleu is the single most commonly missed character in the entire game. She is found sleeping in a house in the town of Wisdon, which is accessed relatively late in the story. Simply entering her house and interacting with her wakes her; she then joins the party voluntarily.
- She is not required to complete the game
- She is one of the strongest magic-users available, with access to high-tier spells
- Missing her is permanent for that save file — there is no way to recruit her later
What to do: When you reach Wisdon, check every house. The one with Bleu appears as an ordinary NPC home. Speak to the sleeping figure.
Dragon Transformations (Ryu)
Ryu’s dragon forms are unlocked progressively through story events, not through optional discovery. However, many players do not fully understand how to access the stronger forms mid-game.
| Form | How Unlocked | Notable Use |
|---|---|---|
| Snap | Available from start | Basic bite attack |
| Rudra | Story event at Dragon Shrine | Lightning-element attack |
| Stone Golem | Story event | High defense transformation |
| Agni (Great Dragon) | Late-game Dragon Shrine event | Most powerful form |
| Tyr | Final area event | Endgame form |
Tip: Dragon AP costs are steep. Use PAR codes for AP or stock up on Herbs/Ammonia before intentionally grinding in dragon form.
Karn’s Fusion Abilities
Karn can fuse with other party members during battle to create combined characters with unique stats and abilities. These are frequently overlooked.
| Fusion Name | Members Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Shin | Karn + Bo + Ox | Powerful all-rounder with high physical stats |
| Doof | Karn + Gobi | Strong water-area fighter |
| Puka | Karn + Bleu + Nina | Magic-focused fusion (requires Bleu recruited) |
Fusion is activated by selecting Fuse in Karn’s battle menu and choosing the targets. The fused form acts as a single character until dismissed.
Fishing System Secrets and Manillo Shops
The fishing mechanic is used to catch fish and trade them at Manillo (Fishy) shop locations — hidden merchants who only accept fish as currency. These shops carry rare equipment unavailable elsewhere.
- Equip the TmplRod (Temple Rod) for highest-tier catches
- Fish type is determined by location — certain rivers and ponds yield rarer species
- The Manillo shopkeeper near Tunlan accepts high-value fish for endgame gear
- Using Gobi’s Trade ability in certain areas triggers special Manillo encounters not found on the overworld
Beneficial Glitches and Exploits
Encounter-Skipping with Dash
Holding B while moving on the overworld or in dungeons in certain emulator versions causes the movement speed to increase enough to skip random encounter triggers on specific tile transitions. This is timing-dependent and more reliable in SNES9x than on hardware.
Equipment Stat Overflow
Equipping certain combinations of accessories that boost the same stat can push the internal counter past 255, wrapping it back to low values. Avoid stacking identical stat-boosting rings on the same character unless intentionally testing behavior.
Town Member Soft-Lock Avoidance
When building the Township, recruiting certain NPCs in the wrong order can cause a dialogue loop. The workaround is to recruit the Carpenter and Farmer before any optional artisan NPCs to prevent the Township board from locking.
Free Revive with Ammonia Duplication
At certain shop counters, rapidly confirming a purchase of Ammonia (full-party revive item) while holding an existing stack can cause the quantity to increment without decrementing Zenny, on original hardware with a slow-responding controller. Requires precise timing on the purchase confirm frame.
Hidden Items and Developer Notes
- A hidden Elixir is located in a barrel in the basement of the Karma Tower — it is never flagged by any NPC and requires manual barrel inspection
- The town of Spring contains a healing fountain accessible by stepping behind the inn counter, restoring full HP/AP without cost
- Examining the dragon statues in the Dragon Shrine rooms in sequence (left to right) before triggering the boss dialogue slightly alters the boss’s opening stat distribution — a vestigial developer tuning artifact
- The Japanese release credits contain a hidden single frame (roughly frame 4,200 of the credit scroll) showing the initials of three programmers not listed in the main staff roll, visible only by pausing an emulator during credits playback
