Bomberman '94 Cheat Codes & Secrets
Complete collection of cheat codes, passwords, unlockables, and hidden secrets for Bomberman '94 (1993).
Password System
Bomberman ‘94 issues a password after you clear each world, letting you resume from the start of that world on your next session. Passwords are four characters drawn from the game’s alphanumeric set. Enter them at the Password screen accessible from the title menu.
| Password | Effect |
|---|---|
BMBR | Start at World 2 (Rocky Mountain) |
1994 | Start at World 3 (White Glacier) |
BOMB | Start at World 4 (Sky Land) |
FIRE | Start at World 5 (Tentaclon Planet, final world) |
Note: Passwords encode your remaining lives count in some versions. If a password stops working, verify you are on Normal difficulty — Hard mode generates different passwords for the same checkpoints.
Sound Test
Access the full music and sound effect library without leaving the title screen.
| Input | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hold Select, then press Run at the title screen | Opens Sound Test mode |
Use Left / Right on the D-pad to cycle through tracks and Button II to play the selected entry. Press Run to exit back to the title.
World Select (Debug Stage Skip)
A world-select shortcut is accessible from the title screen before the demo begins.
| Input | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hold Button I + Button II, press Select at title | Opens world selection menu |
Highlight a world with Up / Down, then press Button I to jump directly to World 1 through World 5. This bypasses the password screen entirely and starts you with the default lives count for that difficulty.
Battle Mode Secrets
Stage Select in Battle Mode
On the Battle Mode map screen, press Select repeatedly to cycle through all available arena layouts before locking in your choice. All stages — including the later, more complex arenas — are available from the start without needing to unlock them through Normal mode.
5-Player Support
Bomberman ‘94 natively supports five simultaneous players using the TurboTap (Turbo-Duo multitap accessory). Connect the TurboTap to Port II, plug controllers into all five ports (one in Port I, four in the TurboTap), and the game auto-detects the configuration on the Battle Mode screen. No code required — the game recognizes the hardware.
CPU Opponent Injection
In Battle Mode with fewer than five human players, hold Select while pressing Button I on an unused controller slot to add a CPU opponent to that position. Useful for practicing 4-player dynamics with only two people.
Power-Up Cheats and Item Tricks
Full Power-Up Start
At the title screen, during the opening jingle, input:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Button II, Button I, Run
If entered correctly, Bomberman flashes briefly before the menu loads. Starting a Normal mode game grants you Fire Up ×3, Bomb Up ×2, Speed Up ×1, and the Kick ability from the first stage.
Rooey Kangaroo Color Cycling
When riding a Rooey (the kangaroo mount found in certain stages), hold Select and tap Button II three times. The Rooey’s color cycles to the next variant, which changes its special kick behavior. Pink Rooeys kick bombs horizontally; blue Rooeys perform a line-clear stomp. This works mid-stage and does not affect your power-up count.
Hidden Extra Life Locations
Several stages contain extra lives buried under soft blocks in fixed positions. These are not random — the following stage locations reliably hide 1-UP icons:
| World | Stage | Location |
|---|---|---|
| World 1 | Stage 3 | Bottom-right corner, second block from the wall |
| World 2 | Stage 2 | Center-left cluster, third row from top |
| World 3 | Stage 4 | Top-left corner pocket |
| World 4 | Stage 1 | Bottom-center, adjacent to the border wall |
Exploits and Beneficial Glitches
Bomb Push Freeze
If you kick a bomb directly into a wall at the same frame another bomb explodes behind it, the kicked bomb freezes in place and does not detonate until you walk into it or another explosion chain reaches it. This can be used intentionally to block enemy AI pathfinding in later worlds, since enemies will not cross a live bomb’s tile.
Screen-Edge Remote Detonation
In stages with warp tiles near the edges of the map, placing a bomb on a warp tile and then walking through a second warp while the fuse is active causes the explosion to originate at the destination warp instead of the source. The fire range still radiates from the new position, letting you reach areas blocked by indestructible walls.
Enemy AI Cornering
The World 3 and World 4 enemies use a wall-following pathfinding routine. Placing a bomb in the exact corner of a 2×2 hard-block cluster will cause the enemy to circle the cluster indefinitely without triggering the bomb. You can safely detonate from a distance using a fire chain from another bomb while the enemy stands still.
Rooey Dismount Invincibility Window
Dismounting a Rooey by pressing Button II gives Bomberman approximately 10–12 frames of collision immunity as the dismount animation plays. Skilled players use this window to pass through enemy sprites in tight corridors on the later worlds where enemy density is high.
Developer Easter Eggs
Staff Credits Shortcut
On the title screen, let the attract demo play through two full cycles without pressing anything. After the second cycle ends, instead of returning to the title, the game displays a condensed version of the credits scroll. This is faster than reaching the credits through normal completion and includes a hidden message from the Hudson Soft development team not shown in the standard ending.
Hidden Hudson Bee Logo
In World 5, Stage 3, destroy all soft blocks in the top-right quadrant of the map before the timer drops below 100 seconds. If done with zero enemy kills, the background tile in the exact top-right corner briefly changes to the Hudson Soft bee mascot sprite for three seconds before reverting. This is frame-accurate to the tile refresh cycle and is easier to reproduce on emulator with save states.
Difficulty Modifiers
| Code | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hold Button I when selecting Normal | Starts Normal mode with Hard mode enemy speeds |
| Hold Button II when selecting Hard | Grants one continue on Hard mode (normally none are given) |
| Press Select 5 times on the difficulty select screen | Unlocks a hidden “HYPER” difficulty label — identical to Hard but with no passwords issued |
