Banjo-Kazooie Cheats & Codes

Cheato Cheat Codes

Cheato is a magic book found hidden in Gruntilda’s Lair. He teaches you cheat codes that unlock various bonuses. Cheato appears three times at three different locations in the lair.

Enter cheat codes by going to the sand castle in Treasure Trove Cove and spelling out words with the footprint tiles. Each code grants specific bonuses:

Code to SpellEffect
BLUEEGGSDouble egg carrying capacity (200)
REDFEATHERSDouble red feather capacity (100)
GOLDFEATHERSDouble gold feather capacity (20)
WISHYWASHYBANJOUnlimited Mumbo Tokens (after finding Mumbo’s skull)
BANJOKAZOOIEAll moves unlocked
KAZOOIEMOVESKazooie’s moves unlocked

Jiggies — 100 Total

Banjo-Kazooie contains 100 Jiggies across 9 game worlds plus Gruntilda’s Lair. Collecting all 100 unlocks the “Nintendo Logo” in the game’s end area. Full completion also grants access to the Sandcastle note-entering mechanic and special endings.

Musical Notes Warning

Critical mechanic: Musical notes on the floor of each world must be collected in a single session. If you die or quit the game before collecting all notes in a world, your count resets to 0 for that world. Notes are NOT saved when you quit — only when you complete a world’s full note count. Plan to collect all notes in one continuous session per world.

Brentilda’s Beauty Tips

Brentilda, Gruntilda’s nicer sister, appears throughout the lair and shares random “Gruntilda secrets” (trivia about Gruntilda’s personal habits). These facts are asked in the game show sequence near the final boss. Write down the answers as you receive them throughout the game to prepare for the quiz.

Gruntilda’s Quiz — How to Prepare

The final section before the final boss is a television game show where Gruntilda asks trivia questions about the game’s content and facts Brentilda revealed. Questions include:

  • Facts about Gruntilda (how much she weighs, her shoe size, her spot cream brand — learned from Brentilda)
  • Game mechanics questions (how many eggs does Banjo carry at max capacity, etc.)
  • World locations of specific items

Write down all of Brentilda’s facts as you encounter them throughout the lair. Failing answers gives Gruntilda additional life in the final boss fight.

Gruntilda’s Lair Shortcuts

Witchyworld door shortcut: From Mad Monster Mansion’s area, stay against the wall heading toward Rusty Bucket Bay to find a passage that bypasses significant lair navigation.

Furnace Fun shortcut: On Furnace Fun (the board game challenge), some squares can be passed without triggering their effect by moving very quickly across them. This requires precise timing and is more luck-dependent than skill-based.

Mumbo Token Uses

Mumbo Jumbo transforms Banjo and Kazooie into specific creatures in each world. Each transformation requires Mumbo Tokens (found in each world). Transformations include:

  • Termite (Mumbo’s Mountain): fits through termite-sized doors
  • Crocodile (Treasure Trove Cove): survives in Rusty Bucket Bay’s polluted water
  • Walrus (Freezeezy Peak): withstands cold water
  • Pumpkin (Mad Monster Mansion): smaller target, spit seeds
  • Bee (Click Clock Wood): fly without using feathers, reach high areas

Transformations are required to complete specific Jiggy puzzles in their respective worlds.

The “Stop N Swop” Mystery

Banjo-Kazooie contained code for a feature called “Stop N Swop” that never shipped — data that allowed saving items between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. The feature was planned to let players transfer items between cartridges by quickly swapping with the N64 powered on. Nintendo determined this could damage the hardware and the feature was pulled. The eggs and ice key data remains in the game’s ROM, making the “Stop N Swop” items collectible but non-functional in the original game.

Banjo-Tooie partially completed the feature, and the Xbox 360 remasters of both games fulfilled the original cross-game connectivity vision.
